I recently met a group of B.A, B. Com, and B. Sc students in a Tier-3 college with 2,200+ students.



Just months before graduation, they were still ๐œ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ about their next steps for future โ€”


yet hopeful that their degree would open some magical doors.



Across India, millions pursuing General Degrees (Arts, Science, Commerce) still believe a โ€œ๐ƒ๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ž ๐ข๐ฌ ๐„๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก.โ€


But without skills, guidance, and clarity, many remain directionless.



๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜บ ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏโ€™๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜บ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ช๐˜ณ ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ถ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ?



Because the context of Skill, & Employability rarely finds thinking space in a general degree framework -ย 



despite 65% ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก enrolment (โ‰ˆ2.5 ๐œ๐ซ๐จ๐ซ๐ž) annually I.e.


(35% ๐€๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ, 15% ๐’๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž, 13% ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ž โ€” AISHE 2021โ€“22).



In contrast to


โ€ข 15โ€“17% join Professional Programmes (Engineering, Medical, Management, etc.)


โ€ข 1% or less reach the elite institutions (IITs, NITs, IIMs)

Their Energy, aspirations, can be harnessed to drive socio-economic growth.

15โ€“20 years to focus on, before aging pressures reshape our society.



๐„๐๐ฎ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ž. ๐„๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฒ. ๐„๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ. ๐„๐ช๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ณ๐ž.


Thatโ€™s how we can harness our youth before the demographic window narrows.



With GER@~30% (aiming for 50% by 2035 as per NEP 2020),


๐ž๐ง๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ค๐ž๐ž๐ฉ ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ .



We cannot leave this majority of youth in ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฅ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐Ÿ-๐๐จ๐ฎ๐›๐ญ:



โ€ข 3/4 long years focused only on earning a degree


โ€ข no skills or competencies


โ€ข no roadmap for future



Affiliating Universities, and Colleges, must rethink on the structure, & outcomes aligned to vision of NEP2020.



Else, ๐•๐ข๐ค๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ก๐š๐ซ๐š๐ญ@2047will remain disconnected from the grassroots


โ€” risking another social crisis.



Change doesnโ€™t always need to be top-driven.


๐’๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ข๐๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ ๐š ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ž๐ง๐ญโ€™๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž.



It can begin with ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ซs to guide students,


for them to stay curious and explore opportunities.



Letโ€™s not reduce Higher Education to a ๐‚๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐Œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ.


Letโ€™s make it a ๐…๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž-๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐Œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ for our youth in small towns and villages.
