I recently met a group of B.A, B. Com, and B. Sc students in a Tier-3 college with 2,200+ students.
Just months before graduation, they were still ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ about their next steps for future โ
yet hopeful that their degree would open some magical doors.
Across India, millions pursuing General Degrees (Arts, Science, Commerce) still believe a โ๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก.โ
But without skills, guidance, and clarity, many remain directionless.
๐๐ฉ๐บ ๐ข๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฏโ๐ต ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐บ ๐ฆ๐ท๐ฆ๐ฏ ๐ข๐ด๐ฌ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ฃ๐ข๐ด๐ช๐ค ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฆ๐ด๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด ๐ข๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ต ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ช๐ณ ๐ง๐ถ๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ณ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ค๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ?
Because the context of Skill, & Employability rarely finds thinking space in a general degree framework -ย
despite 65% ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก enrolment (โ2.5 ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ซ๐) annually I.e.
(35% ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ, 15% ๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐, 13% ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐๐ โ AISHE 2021โ22).
In contrast to
โข 15โ17% join Professional Programmes (Engineering, Medical, Management, etc.)
โข 1% or less reach the elite institutions (IITs, NITs, IIMs)
๐๐ฉ๐บ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ด 65% ๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ต๐บ โ ๐ช๐ฏ ๐๐ช๐ฆ๐ณ-2, ๐๐ช๐ฆ๐ณ-3, ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ณ๐ข๐ญ ๐ค๐ฐ๐ญ๐ญ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฆ๐ด โ ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ข๐ช๐ฏ๐ด ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ต๐ด๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ ๐ฎ๐ข๐ช๐ฏ๐ด๐ต๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฎ ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ท๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด, ๐ฆ๐ท๐ฆ๐ฏ ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฏ ๐๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ขโ๐ด ๐ญ๐ข๐ณ๐จ๐ฆ๐ด๐ต ๐บ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ต๐ฉ ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐จ๐ณ๐ข๐ฑ๐ฉ๐บ ๐ช๐ด ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ข๐ด ๐ข ๐ด๐ต๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐จ๐ต๐ฉ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฃ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ด๐ฆ?
Their Energy, aspirations, can be harnessed to drive socio-economic growth.

29 Yrs (2025) โ 35 Yrs (2040) โ 38โ39 Yrs (2047)
15โ20 years to focus on, before aging pressures reshape our society.
๐๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ญ๐. ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฒ. ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐๐ซ. ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ณ๐.
Thatโs how we can harness our youth before the demographic window narrows.
With GER@~30% (aiming for 50% by 2035 as per NEP 2020),
๐๐ง๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ค๐๐๐ฉ ๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ .
We cannot leave this majority of youth in ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐-๐๐จ๐ฎ๐๐ญ:
โข 3/4 long years focused only on earning a degree
โข no skills or competencies
โข no roadmap for future
Affiliating Universities, and Colleges, must rethink on the structure, & outcomes aligned to vision of NEP2020.
Else, ๐๐ข๐ค๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐๐ญ@2047will remain disconnected from the grassroots
โ risking another social crisis.
Change doesnโt always need to be top-driven.
๐๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐๐ง ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ง๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ ๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐๐ง๐ญโ๐ฌ ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐.
It can begin with ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ฎ๐๐ฅ ๐ญ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ซs to guide students,
for them to stay curious and explore opportunities.
Letโs not reduce Higher Education to a ๐๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ.
Letโs make it a ๐ ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐-๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ for our youth in small towns and villages.
